Breast Cancer Awareness & Importance of Exercise
What is it? What can we do?
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The purpose of this month is to increase awareness, promote screening, support research, and empower survivors.
What can we do to help?
- Donate
- Volunteer
- Participate in events
- Organize a fundraiser
- Wear pink
- Educate yourself about risk factors
Did you know that lack of exercise is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer?
Regular exercise SIGNIFICANTLY helps lower the risk of developing breast cancer. How does it do this?
- Maintains a healthy weight
- Regulates hormones: such as insulin and estrogen
- Boosts immune function
- Reduces inflammation in the body
What exercise do we need to do?
It's best to incorporate some type of aerobic and strength training exercise regimen to maintain/increase muscle mass and bone density.
Some examples to try for each:
- Aerobic: brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, jogging, and rowing.
- Strength training: body weight exercises, weighted exercises, compound movements, core and balance exercises
How much do we need to do? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations are:
- Aerobic activity: adults engage in 150 min/week of moderate intensity or 75 min/week of high intensity aerobic activity
- Strength training: at least 2 days a week, targeting all major muscle groups.
