Self-care isn’t selfish, it's survival!
Self-care is more than watching your favorite TV show to unwind from a stressful day, it's every action that improves areas of your wellbeing. The small things you can practice every day to nurture your wellbeing, like practicing mindfulness.
For self-care to be holistic, we need to look at all the areas that address our wellbeing. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration there are eight dimensions of wellness.
- Emotional Wellness
- Environmental Wellness
- Financial Wellness
- Intellectual Wellness
- Occupational Wellness
- Physical Wellness
- Social Wellness
- Spiritual Wellness
Self-care is not only beneficial to your own life, but it also affects others around you. The more we implement our own self-care practices the more we start to approach our actions and choices with greater intention and focus.
You can’t take care of others if you are not taking care of yourself first.
We frequently find ourselves in a culture that celebrates relentless hustling and excessive accomplishments. This results in significant stress.
Here are some ways to practice self-care that are more than having a spa day.
- Spend time in nature
- Breathing exercises
- Time away from your phone
- Exercise
Focus on activities that ground you. Staying grounded helps you connect more compassionately with both yourself and those around you.
Practice self-care daily and watch your wellbeing thrive.
